The 1984 XR-1000 Sportster motorcycle had electrical power enough to impress any rider, but not enough of them have been ready to shell out its high priced cost tag. Manufacturing in the Harley-Davidson XR-1000 ceased soon after its 1984 model run.
Harley's XR-750 racing bike appreciated this kind of accomplishment around the nation's flat tracks that a street model was launched in 1983 to capitalize to the notoriety.
Though based on the stripped-down XLX Sportster, the XR-1000 was fitted with distinctive cylinder heads comparable to those discovered about the racing version.
These had intake ports entering the rear of the two cylinders fed by dual about the right-hand side, and front-exiting exhaust ports emptying into high-mounted dual mufflers that exited on the left.
By contrast, all other Sportsters had a single carb (also about the ideal) that fed to centrally mounted consumption ports, with exhaust exiting around the appropriate from outboard ports.
The modifications resulted in an output of almost 70 , a figure only dreamed of for other Sportsters, and gave the XR-1000 acceleration unequaled by any other street motorbike Harley had ever constructed.
Unfortunately, the race-bred hardware that manufactured the XR-1000 rather quick also manufactured it quite highly-priced. At nearly $2,000 in excess of the XLX, not sufficient riders appreciated the difference, and the XR would fade in to the sunset after the 1984 model run.
